We got us!
The Food for the People program was founded in the spring of 2020, a month before the murder of George Floyd and the subsequent uprising. The program was founded as a collaboration between grassroots based, radical food movement: Divine Natural Ancestry and local, immigrant farmer owned: Shared Ground Farmers Cooperative. The first two years of the program we successfully distributed 2,842 CSA boxes directly to households and community centers in our Black, Indigenous and People of Culture and working class community while paying our partner farms over $80,000. All CSA boxes are FREE so as to prevent any financial barriers for our community to eat fresh, nutrient dense food from our local farmers. Many of the program members are not able to purchase this high quality food as it is inaccessibly priced so high at the markets.
Each week for the 18 week CSA season we organized a team of over 20 volunteers to pack each CSA box full of vegetables, eggs, herbs, mushrooms, and speciality items such as bread, honey, microgreens. We then drove each box directly to the destination to prevent any conflicts with the recipients schedule getting in the way of having to pick it up. We hosted educational workshops, slaughter your own animal workshops, and plan to host more community oriented gatherings as we feel safe to do so.
We believe access to fresh, nutrient dense food from local farmers should be a human right.
